The Department of Water Resources has an innovative solution for water conservation in Los Angeles. It is a rebate program incentive for homeowners who remove turf and replace it with landscapes that require little water. This is in support of the State’s drought response. The $24 million program budget is expected to support the conversion of more than 10 million square feet of turf, or approximately 20 percent of the statewide goal of 50 million square feet of turf. The total rebated amount, including any rebates the homeowner has already applied for from another agency, can’t exceed a total of $2 per square foot and will be capped at 1,000 square feet with a maximum rebate of $2,000 per household.
Outdoor landscaping is the biggest user of water for most California homes, with lawns consuming most of the outdoor water use. Lawns also require regular maintenance and can use fertilizers and generate weekly yard waste. Conversion to a drought tolerant landscape may dramatically reduce both water and maintenance expenses. In addition to saving money, converting turf grass yards into drought tolerant landscapes serve to allow each homeowner and California resident to do their part to contribute to long-term water sustainability.
Water Conservation tip: Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to reduce evaporation and keep the soil cool. You’ll save 20-30 gallons each time you water 1,000 sq.ft.
