Sewer Gas Problem that was filling the aging K-12 grade school building!

SLB Pipe Solutions of Indiana was contacted by Darrin Seymour of Franklin Community Schools in Franklin, Illinois about a sewer gas problem that was filling the aging K-12 grade school building. Students and staff complained about the smell that filled the school. Darrin knew the issue was the deteriorating ductile iron sewer main buried in a utility corridor underneath the building and began searching for possible solutions. When he came across cured-in-place-pipe relining he contacted Joel and Eric of SLB Pipe Solutions. SLB answered all of Darrin’s questions and set up a date to camera the line. The camera inspection revealed longitudinal cracks in the D.I.P. and the buildup on the interior of the pipe causing extremely slow drainage. SLB Pipe Solutions and Franklin Community School District set a date to reline 207 LF of 6″ sewer main which required reinstating 5 lateral lines connecting to the main. SLB arrived at the high school when school let out for Thanksgiving break. Cleaning and hydro jetting the line to remove all the debris in the line was the challenging part of the job. Once cleaned, SLB relined the first 103 LF from the downstream cleanout located in the utility corridor near the boiler room in the basement of the school. The next work day SLB relined the remaining 104 LF overlapping the downstream section by 3 feet from an upstream point. Access was gained by removing a previously patched hole in the concrete floor to the utility corridor where the 6″ main line was suspended before being buried in the corridor. This section of the mainline had 2 sweeping 90 degree bends that were passed through easily. After both sections were cured out, SLB with Darrin’s help reinstated 5 lateral lines that connected to the main line inside the corridor. The next week Darrin reported there were no more sewer smells in the school and the school staff was ecstatic with the outcome!
